2025/2026 HIBR SCHOLARSHIP INFORMATION

  • Eligibility

    Applicant must be a member of a sanctioned HIBR chapter. Become a member HERE.

    Open to high school seniors, recent graduates, and current college students in Hawai'i.

    Must demonstrate a passion for surfing and a commitment to education.

    Minimum GPA: 2.5 (on a 4.0 scale).

  • Application components

    Video Submission (3-5 minutes):
    Applicants should submit a video showcasing their surfing skills and sharing their story. The video should include:

    Footage of the applicant surfing, highlighting their connection to the ocean.

    A personal introduction explaining their educational goals and how surfing has shaped their life.

    Insights on how they plan to balance surfing with their studies and why it is important to maintain this balance.

    Reflections on the benefits of surfing:

    Short-term benefits: Stress relief, mental clarity, physical health, and community engagement.

    Long-term benefits: Lifelong discipline, connection to nature, and a foundation for leadership and personal growth.

    Letter of Recommendation:
    One letter from a teacher, coach, or mentor who can speak to the applicant’s character, academic achievements, and passion for surfing.

    Academic Transcript:
    A copy of the most recent transcript to verify GPA and academic standing.

  • Evaluation Criteria

    Passion for Surfing & Lifestyle Balance (40%): How well the applicant demonstrates their love for surfing and plans to integrate it into their educational journey.

    Clarity of Educational Goals (30%): The applicant’s ability to articulate their goals and how the scholarship will impact their future.

    Video Creativity & Storytelling (20%): The creativity and authenticity of the video submission.

    Community Involvement & Leadership (10%): Evidence of community engagement and leadership through surfing or other activities.

    Applications will open Jan 9, 2025 and close on March 7, 2025.

    Submission Information

    All materials should be submitted via google forms.

    Videos should be uploaded to a private link (e.g., YouTube or Vimeo) and shared with the application form.

    Award Notification

    Scholarship recipients will be notified by March 28, 2025 and invited to a special awards ceremony.
